American Fishing Series, sort of like the addition of four U.S. Open fee level events, is the new look for FLW starting in January. Ending speculation about the former National Guard Series, and now with the addition of Mercury Marine as a sponsor, the FLW circuit retains a western flavor.
More than the $1000 entries for pros and $400 for co-anglers, the fields will be limited to 150 boats–hopefully not an imaginary figure. We’re told the payout could include prizes the size of the entry fee down to 50th spot if the circuit is well-received. That’s got to be a plus.
Even a casual follower would have to like the schedule–at least on paper. Fishy lakes at fishy times–without having to become a citizen of Oregon–is something on just about everyone’s wish list.
According to the latest, you’ll have the following:
–Jan. 13-15 — Lake Shasta — Redding, Calif.
–Feb. 17-19 — Lake Roosevelt — Payson, Ariz.
–May 5-7 — California Delta — Stockton, Calif.
–Sept. 22-24 — Clear Lake — Clearlake, Calif.
These are followed by the league championship Oct. 27-30 — Kentucky Lake — Buchanan, Tenn. (a popular spot with Californians, no doubt). At stake could be as much as $50,000 and a new Ranger in that event, plus a spot in the Forrest Wood Cup.
Obviously, it’s kind of a hybrid, but looks like a good fit for the West. We’ll have to wait and see if FLW has pushed the right buttons.
What d’ya think?

It’s not NG with the paybacks but better than the AFS of old so it will have to work. Too bad I’m not a Ranger boat owner but what the hell, I’m in. Anyone have a Ranger sticker the size of my Champion logo on my boat? LOL
I think your response is the right one for the current tournament climate, Guy. We want to have something that keeps the juices flowing.
If I was out there I’d fish it! It looks like a really good schedule, VERY reasonable (for the west) travel distances, and if you qualify, Kentucky Lake is awesome (unless it’s really windy, then… :O !) Now, it’s really just three tournaments because you can write the name of ROBERT LEE c/o Angels Camp (very pretty ‘lil town) down on the winner’s check for the Delta………
