Not a lot of good news emanating from the Caribbean lately, but I did learn that the Blakemore (Road Runner) factory in that country has survived the earthquake that has dominated the national media for more than a week.

“We got some good news Friday about 4:00. Everyone was in the building (mostly metal construction) working overtime that day. They normally leave at 3:30 but planned to stay until 5:00 because of the workload,” said TJ Stallings, Blakemore’s marketing director.

As it turned out, the earthquake occurred at 4:58 p.m. and there were no injuries or measurable damage to the facilities.

The Road Runner, and other baits in the company product line have a proven track record in the panfish world, but have found a new following among bass fishermen in the West as part of the “under-spin” craze. (Thus the overtime work at the factory).

The Blakemore Road Runner was first introduced some 50 years ago and has earned the reputation “Everything eats ‘em.” And I sure can’t argue.

Despite the fact the factory has survived, there will be an interruption in lure production, according to Stallings. “They’ll be down for a month or so while they are waiting on diesel for the generators. Regardless of the delay, we’re so happy (our people) survived.”
