Probably going to be tough to beat yesterday’s kicker–while taking my own advice from January 6 on the “other” jigging bait (a Heddon Sonar)–but this morning with rain gear at the ready, I’m going to check out Diamond Valley.

I heard all the secrets: drop-shot, Carolina, Texas, wacky, jig and craw and live crickets, so we’ll probably have to narrow things down once we get there. I even threw in a swimbait and a big topwater in case the only things interested have stripes. Regardless, the lake is fishy, the winter weather has been especially mild for us, and next week they’re talking a lot of rain–so we’re going now.

Rain, of course, has been heavy up at Lake Shasta the last couple of days, just in time for the kickoff of the FLW National Guard Series. It looks like forecast calls for some rain on the first day and on the final, with a sunny Thursday and a cloudy Friday on tap as well. You really have to appreciate what the pro angler goes through–especially those who have traveled a long way for less than ideal conditions.

Still, January tournaments at Shasta have also been known for snow and sub-freezing conditions, so with the temperature not getting below the 40′s, no one can complain too much. The changing weather, river flows and a strong field add up to a very interesting contest, both for the pros and co-anglers. I hope to catch at least one of each after the weigh-in this afternoon.

Anyway, we’ll have to see what the Diamond has in store. But if I can beat this Sonar fish (8-1) from yesterday, I may have to retire…

Nice fish George. I hope you get a bigger one today. By the way, 140 boats at Shasta. I guess I was wrong. Lets see if it holds up the entire season. I hope it does.

Give us folks that live in the frozen tundra a fish report!!!

Terry
