Showing how little we amateur biologists know about the nitrogen cycle and just about anything else we thought we remembered from back in the 8th grade, I just got the Oxygen Profile for Lake Elsinore for the week of Aug. 25-31. And it’s a good one.

I know it was hotter than a Bobby Flay grilled cheese this past week, but the fact is, natural and artificial mixing, plus cooler nights allowed the lake to hold a good oxygen level, according to Pat Kilroy of the Lake & Aquatic Resources Dept.

Specifically he said of the report, “Most fish in the lake get stressed when the dissolved oxygen concentration falls below 2.0 mg/L.  The data shows that this is only occurring below a 4 meter depth.  There exists a huge refuge for fish of well oxygenated water between the surface and 4 meters (approximately 12 feet).  Overall the oxygen levels are looking very good, despite this hot weather.”

It’s pretty obvious, then that there is a direct correlation between the this optimal oxygen zone and the best bass catches in the last two weeks or so–they’re all shallow. The highest oxygen content is in less than two feet of water, but extends down to six feet at times, with another six feet of decent levels.

What it doesn’t say,  however, is to use a white or chartreuse spinnerbait. You’ll have to do that on your own.

Glad to hear it, George. Wish I could get out but work has me jammed for the next week. Then off to Margarita. This is great news though for the lake. It looks like the worst is over. The dead fish pics I saw looked like a lot of baitfish and very few predator fish.

It is very good news. But nothing would sound better than rain on the roof this winter. Good luck at Margarita, Ray!

Elsinore is off the hook when it comes to southern cal best fishing lakes where anyone can go without any restrictions

Well, Chris. They do have some restrictions (including a 150 mph speed limit) but compared to most waters, yes, your technology is good technology.

Hey this is Chris Nickerson I’m really looking foward for the Federation Tourney in November. Let’s start signing up for region 8 now; Elsinore a great lake, Ive caught numerous bass in the 4- to 6-pound range. LETS GO FISHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big Chris

was out at elsinore last week with Brian Day and we got on em pretty good, until the heat was too much to continue. left the launch ramp at 2 pm at 111 degrees. but definately not a bad day on the water with 7 or so fish for 10.5 -11 lbs. Scott

Good to hear, of course. But Nature is fickle, Scott. This weekend’s oxygen profile dropped right down to nothing and the lake folks are really hoping to get through Labor Day and to some cooler nights. What oxygen there is right now in less than 2 feet…scary.

Im glad to hear you and Brian got on them Brian is a great guy and knows Elsinore sounds like it was fun.

Hey Brian our club meeting is Wednesday 7pm. Im going to try to get out to the lake this week sometime I’m interested how that new structure is taking place at the lake.
