The email read: “Look what I caught.”
It was from a regular to this site, Rich Lingor up in Bradley. He noted that he had caught a bass, but he had also discovered the where-abouts of Hawaii Mars which had left Lake Elsinore approximately a week ago.
The only word locally was that the plane, along with its entire support team, was headed to fight the fires up in Santa Barbara and related areas. But there was speculation on where the seaplane would operate. Cachuma, Casitas, or one of the closed private lakes?
The fussy folks up at Lake Cachuma or Casitas with the quagga restrictions and poor access would seem to discount them as emergency headquarters, even if the fire was right in their own backyard. Then, sure enough, it was Rich who found the flying boat–right in his own backyard.
Thanks for the update!

Hey, Chris. I’m with you: that big red plane is quite a sight to see. I’ll tell you what, if the Mars were to circle 200 feet off the water and land on Castaic or Clear Lake on a busy Saturday, they’d be talking about it until Gary Dobyns gets a new zip code! It’s pretty remarkable.

Fished San Antonio and Naci last weekend, San Antonio was the toughest I’ve seen it, but Naci gave up the spots like always- got some great pics and some video of that plane on the water. According to my Dad, a retired FAA controller, it was built in the early 40′s as a transcontinental plane. Really cool seeing it on the water.
