The first to weigh, (after an agonizing hour of inane peripheral stage presentations), Alpine’s Rusty Selewske took over the lead for the $1,000,000 top prize in FLW’s Forrest Wood Cup. His limit weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces gives him a 15-ounce cushion over David Curtis with a limit weighing 5 pounds, 7 ounces in tournament marked by one-pound smallmouth.
Cody Meyer of Redding was the only other angler in the final 10 to post a five bass limit–his weighing an even 5 pounds–good for third place. His plan today, he told FLW LIVE, “I just go fishing. I find ‘em as I go.”
While the tournament is wide open with regard to possibilities, let the record show that Larry Nixon is in 10th place with 10 ounces for two bass (including apparent penalty for dead fish).
The tournament concludes Sunday. All the grim details are available on the FLW website.

Thanks, Kellen for getting the story straight for me. At least we know he didn’t weigh in two 5-ounce bass–well, not two that measured 12 inches.
Sounds like the real scoop is that Nixon brought three fish up, one which was short and was released at the check-in prior to official weigh-in where he only brought the two remaining fish. Those two fish weighed 1-10, and after the 1 pound penalty for the 3rd fish never mentioned, he ended up with 10 ounces.
This is part of the embarrassment I posted about on July 17. When you look at the faces of the anglers, including some hard-working co-anglers who have to bring up one 13-ounce bass just to get some TV time–they are in agony. And worse, to then have some unknown pro tell us he couldn’t have caught his impressive 3-pound bag without his Damiki rods–somebody give me CPR!

Nixon was penalized for a short fish, or at least that is what Charlie Evans announced. But it was curious how that went down…when he weighed in he was announced to have 1-10 with the two fish. Then Evans explained he received the penalty for weighing a short fish, announced as the DQ of that particular fish plus a 1 pound penalty. He likely would have weighed negative weight if they assessed it as they explained. Not sure what happened, but in either case something was explained improperly.
