Free Fishing Day?
Sounds like a good idea. Introduce new people to fishing without the burden of purchasing even a one-day fishing license. Do it twice a year and the few wardens that are left on the payroll won’t have to ask anyone why they aren’t showing theirs.
Problem is, the Fourth of July weekend is not the time to try and introduce anyone to anything but a sunburn. Families, if they’re anywhere near water, are going to be doing familiar activities together; individuals aren’t going to split off and experiment with a new activity, just to save a few bucks.
I don’t remember California getting this far off the mark for designation, but Free Fishing Day used to be held in conjunction with National Fishing & Boating Week (normally held in June). Maybe California didn’t know when to hold it because now there is also a National Fishing Week that doesn’t come up until later in July.
Still, just because more people are out on the holiday weekend doesn’t mean more people are going to be fishing. In fact, most bass fishermen with families are happy to give up this weekend–and trade it for just about any other Saturday on the calendar.
I read the posts about boating on the Delta. And it was every bit the same on Lake Elsinore today. I could only see one fishing boat on the water, and they didn’t look like they were having such a good time of it.

Ya it’s hilarious…For the Delta, the fisherman (normal amount for Russo’s) went out fishing early and 99% of them were back in between noon and 2 p.m…..For the 3-4day holiday crowd is was madding around here. One accident with 6 aboard happened Friday (Drunk).
It’s Sunday now and they’re all starting to come back in (skiers) and going home until the next holiday. Vessel Assistance is makin’ alot of money today…Going out today 10 a.m., and hiding inside of an Island that they’re scared to death to even adventure in.
Awesome George… LOL

That’s hilarious. Who would do that?
