One party after another is having just that–a party–as Casitas offers up its easiest catching of the entire year.

After yet another week of making shad early and popping post-spawn bass like Orville Redenbacher, you can keep the hardware, thank you. Happy clients such as Mark Bagan pictured here, are happy to use the freshwater “candy,” which produced this lean 7-pound lunker, taken Saturday.

While sight-fishing is not entirely done for the spring, it has waned in many locations. That’s why I asked Brent Ehrler, FLW Tour Champion and recent FLW Series winner to talk about the next big thing after his bed fishing win at Lake Havasu.

Brent’s at home for maybe a week before he’s on to the next pro stop, but he’s staying alert to fish movements–certainly seasonal ones–until he actually sees what’s in front of him when he’s out on the water. But the point he made, as spawn turns to post-spawn, is how the fish react and then, where the bites come.

Just got a look at the Bassfan.com World Rankings (click here) and Kevin VanDam has lengthened his lead to almost 35 points ahead of SoCal’s Brent Ehrler, the only other national pro with at least 200 or more points.

It’s such a dominant position, I can almost hear the whisperings of the guys languishing in the back of the pack: that they aren’t going to fish the tour anymore if VanDam continues to show up. It wouldn’t surprise me. Wasn’t it former Californian Gary Klein who said, (more…)

Talk about irony.

Two of the largest lakes in Southern California, though for completely different reasons, sit dormant in the face of anxious bass anglers looking for a place to fish that provides high quality, without excessive travel.

San Vicente, which opened in 1943, is down due to a construction project that will raise its dam 117 feet. The projected reopening of the reservoir (when the water will reach the new marina and launch ramp) is said to be sometime between 2014 and 2017 depending on the availability of water.

Diamond Valley Lake, on the other hand, opened in 2002 but was ultimately closed to private boats this past summer (more…)
